"Seven Beauties"—the fourth poem in Nizami’s immortal "Khamsa"—differs significantly from his other poems. Alongside a description of the life and exploits of the ancient Iranian king Bahram, it includes fabulous short stories told by Bahram’s seven wives, princesses from seven countries around the world who live in seven palaces, each a different color corresponding to a specific day of the week. The symbolism and fantastical elements of the stories are intertwined with depictions of reality. As in his other poems, Nizami’s "Seven Beauties" champions the ideals of justice and goodness.
