While our emotional, cognitive, psycho-historical, religious, and traditional foods and sources—gathered pollen by pollen from the cradle of Anatolian civilization and hewn from our own essence—remain with us, why do we become captivated by the prescriptions of Pop Psychology that hold out a bowl to the cultural imperialism of Anglo-American or Anglo-Saxon civilizations under the guise of Personal Development Technologies? Is there no tradition of psychology or psychotherapy that we can distill and create from our own vocabulary of meaning? Why are we trying to shape the generations to come, as well as our national and spiritual identity, with artificial, synthetic, shallow, embellished, flashy, consumer-driven, hypocritical, conformist, pleasure-seeking, and superficial personal development tools that are alien to our cultural codes and whose very words we do not even understand? What could ‘Modern Psychology,’ which denies the wisdom of authentic times and these lands, possibly offer us? Where are the social fabric to which we belong as individuals, our ideals, our moral character, our traditional meaning-makers and archetypes, our culture of conversation; our spiritual leaders such as Yunus, Mevlânâ, Hacı Bektâş, and Hacı Bayrâm, our family bonds, our ton-on-ton-aged grandmothers who recounted the days of old, our free-spirited, ecstatic village eccentrics who colored our lives and spoke their minds openly, our folk songs, each possessing the depth of a classic novel, our marbling art that draws us into other worlds, our weddings, each a musical revue in its own right, our heart-wrenching laments, our martyrs and saints whom we hold in the highest esteem, and our willow trees to which we tie colorful rags in the spring! Is there really nothing this land has to say to us? In this work, which we have titled Sufi Therapy, we seek to identify and distinguish the lineages of these questions and yearnings, thereby offering an alternative to modern psychology, psychotherapies, and the personal development craze. Remember; this is our story…
