Chess is one of the important works by the world-renowned psychologist Stefan Zwein. Zweig, who drew on his experience and knowledge of psychology in his works, demonstrated his mastery in Chess as well. Chess portrays the individuals he examined in his biographical writings through the characters in the story, emphasizing their psychological dimensions.
The renowned psychologist Zweig wrote various works while living in Brazil, and one of them was Chess. Perhaps because of the migrations he experienced in his personal life, Zweig set Chess aboard a passenger ship bound for Buenos Aires. Departing from New York, the ship is the setting for the events in Chess. It witnesses an unlikely encounter that takes place by chance. The encounter involves McConnor, who regards defeat at chess as humiliation; M. Czentovic, the reigning world champion; and Dr. B., a master player who has stayed away from chess for a long time.
This work, which chess lovers and those interested in psychology will want to read in one sitting, gains even greater significance from being one of the few works Zweig wrote before his death.
