A. Süheyl Ünver
Ord. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Süheyl Ünver (February 17, 1898 – February 14, 1986), an extraordinary man of culture and the arts who devoted his life to the history of medicine, art, and culture, was one of the exceptional figures who connect our past to the present. Alongside his medical practice, he spent 75 of his 88 years without pause reading, writing, researching, teaching, painting, practicing illumination, conversing, and building an archive.
From the 1920s onward, one of Süheyl Ünver’s enduring interests was our flower culture, and tulips in particular. The attention tulips received under the Seljuks and later the Ottomans—and the fact that a period in our history came to be known as the “Tulip Era”—show that flowers, and tulips among them, hold a special place in our cultural memory. In his writings, Ünver explores in detail the tulip’s journey in Anatolia from the 13th to the 20th century, its changing cultivation characteristics, its place in our decorative arts, and its formal qualities, while producing hundreds of drawings inspired by his imagination, observations, and designs related to tulips.
This book brings together Süheyl Ünver’s research and illustrations on tulips. It also includes, as separate sections, facsimile editions of Şükûfename-i Ali Çelebi from the family archive and Lâlezâr-ı Süheylî from the Süleymaniye Library, in an effort to realize the book he envisioned in 1921.
