In outlining the book, we decided to start by giving an account of the world-famous İznik tiles and ceramics through a brief history of the beautiful city that gave birth to the tiles and the art and industry of tile-making. In the chapters that follow the historical account, we provide brief, informative accounts of tile production and designs, before introducing İznik tiles through their finest examples, which adorn many of the major buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Our survey of tiles includes both those used on the walls of buildings and İznik ceramics currently exhibited in museums and collections around the world.
In the book, we have classified the tile decorations frequently used in the architectural works of the period according to the buildings in which they appear. The following chapters introduce a chronological list of skillfully crafted ceramics.
