I opened my eyes to the world in the midst of a war. I didn't know exactly where the midst of the war was, but my mother always used to say, "I gave birth to you in the midst of a war."
The date is April 23, 1920. There is no place to step in front of the Grand National Assembly building. A stall catches the eye at the back of the crowd. In front of it is a child, perhaps a street vendor. Does he have a mother? Is his father alive? How does a child live life when the homeland is weary, the people are poor, and hopes have vanished?
Şermin Yaşar, one of the productive and beloved authors of our children's literature, takes us back to the years of the War of Independence through the eyes of a sherbet seller. Accompanied by Gökçe Akgül's delicate drawings, we will experience together the mobilization, the hope slowly blooming in the footsteps of our great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the change in society, the days spent in deprivation, and the awaited victory. In the light shed by the great name of Turkish historiography, İlber Ortaylı, on the historical aspects of the days of the National Struggle, we will welcome the first morning of the Republic together.
